While many museums across Australia offer free entry, Melbourne Museum truly proves that some experiences are well worth the admission fee. We spent over five hours exploring the museum and still felt like we could have stayed longer. The very first highlight was joining a guided walk led by Denis, who provided a wonderful and engaging overview of the museum’s collections. The range of galleries is impressive — from towering dinosaur skeletons to fascinating bug collections and the Gondwana Garden. My personal favourites were: *First Peoples– a powerful and moving exploration of Aboriginal history and culture. *Melbourne Gallery (History of Melbourne)– beautifully curated stories tracing the city’s development. *Forest Gallery– a serene, living rainforest space right inside the museum. We even had a small picnic outside. Federation Tapestry collection is also stunning — symbolic, and deeply meaningful. We also joined the eel-feeding session and learned about their habitat. Very well worth a visit.
This museum was a fantastic experience, largely because it had so many fun and interactive components. It’s a really great place to visit if you enjoy learning about history, seeing different kinds of animals, and exploring nature. I especially liked how engaging everything was, it wasn't just reading displays, but actually getting to participate. Normally, you don't expect museums to have live animals, but this one was a pleasant surprise because it does! They had a really interesting selection, and it added a unique dimension to the whole experience. Because of all this, I will definitely come back to this museum again in the future. It’s a place worth revisiting!
The Melbourne Museum was incredible! We were fortunate enough to see the Star Wars LEGO exhibition, which was amazing. You should definitely spend half a day here. It's one of the most beautiful museums I’ve visited in the world.
A must visit with kids! What an interactive museum! A whole lot of effort put into a museum. A splendid example how "boring history" really comes to life. They even have a great kids play area, where even the little ones playfully learn things. Excellent museum!
Love the museum, and the dinosaurs exhibition was awesome. I was unfortunately a bit disappointed in the Viking exhibition. I thought there would have been some axes or shield but just small trinkets ect.....and the price was miss leading to enter the Viking exhibition. Otherwise, I loved it ... Best place to take your kids
Highly recommend visiting the Melbourne Museum if you're in the city. We purchased general entry tickets and still ran out of time to explore everything. It’s incredibly spacious with so much to see and learn. My husband and I especially enjoyed the dinosaur and earth minerals exhibits, which were both fascinating and well presented. The museum is truly educational and captivating at the same time. Definitely worth a visit!
The Melbourne Museum is an impressive and thoughtfully designed space, and overall a very enjoyable visit. From the moment you step inside, the building itself sets the tone. It was clean, modern, and wonderfully spacious, with plenty of natural light and well considered layouts that make it easy to explore without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. The exhibitions are curated with care and clearly aim to balance education with engagement. There’s a strong emphasis on storytelling, context, and visual presentation, which makes complex ideas accessible without being overly simplified. I particularly appreciated how interactive elements are woven throughout, offering moments of discovery that keep both adults and children engaged. It’s a museum that invites curiosity rather than demanding prior knowledge, which is always a win. That said, while the experience was consistently interesting, it didn’t quite reach the level of fascination I had hoped for. A few exhibits felt more informative than immersive, and I found myself wanting a little more depth or surprise in certain sections. Nothing detracts from the quality of the museum itself, but expectations were perhaps set just a touch higher. The facilities are excellent and are well maintained, easy to navigate, and clearly designed with visitor comfort in mind. It’s a great place to spend a few hours, especially for families or anyone with a general interest in science, history, and culture. A solid four stars out of five and I found it polished, enjoyable, and worth visiting, even if it didn’t completely blow my mind.
