Sweet Canteen

Sweet Canteen has the best egg tarts in Melbourne; make sure you tell the staff to warm them up. The shop is small, with only a handful of tables, so I wouldn't recommend working here. Perfect for take-away or a short session of catching up with friends.

The service was very bad, and the person who ordered it was very rude. I said that I only ordered one cake and needed to take it away. But she kept asking me to wait. She didn't give it to me even though she had put it in front of me. She said she would wait for the drink to be ready, but I just need to get the cake and leave. The service attitude is very impatient and keeps letting me go. I won't go again. It will affect my mood all day!

I came here to enjoy coffee and dessert while getting some writing done, but was told laptops and tablets aren’t allowed. Honestly, this makes no sense. I ordered and paid for coffee and dessert specifically to sit down and work, but instead I’m forced to type on my phone. On top of that, the coffee was far too acidic, though I’ll give credit that the citrus tart was actually quite good. Overall, a very disappointing experience.

The sweets were absolutely delicious, the staff were very friendly, and the place felt cozy and welcoming. They were also incredibly kind and attentive to our dog, which we really appreciated. Highly recommended! 🐶✨

During the two weeks I worked in the city, Sweet Canteen became my happy place. Every break, I’d come in for my coffee or tea, and every time I was greeted with warmth, smiles, and genuine kindness. Ms Wang is an absolute gem. From the laughter to the moment we were literally dancing in the café, she created an atmosphere that felt joyful, welcoming, and full of heart. Her and all the girls who work there are nothing short of amazing — attentive, friendly, and truly lovely people who make you feel seen and valued. I was also gifted a heart-shaped tiramisu cake, and wow — hands down the best tiramisu I’ve ever had. So rich, perfectly balanced, and made with love. It was such a beautiful, thoughtful gesture that I’ll never forget. Thank you, Ms Wang, and thank you to the incredible team at Sweet Canteen. You turned simple coffee breaks into cherished memories. I’ll always come back whenever I’m in the city 🤍

Incredible pastries! Not overly sweet and perfectly flaky pastry. A beautiful balance of flavours in everything we sampled. Definitely recommend!

*edited review* - staff charged me $23.98 for a strawberry shortcake and small ice chocolate upon recent visit - won’t go back here if staff can’t enter correct pricing on machine The staff are so lovely and friendly , love the vibes in here. The strawberry shortcake/profiterole and ice chocolate is literally so underrated- it is to die for - sooooooo good!!!! 110% will come back regularly❤️
