Castle Hill Cafe
Castle Hill Cafe offers a convenient dining option at Townsville Airport, catering primarily to travelers in transit. While the coffee and select menu items receive praise for quality, portions can be modest, and pricing may not align with expectations for budget-conscious patrons. The cafe operates with a self-service QR ordering system, though occasional delays or miscommunication may arise in fulfilling table-side requests.
The overall experience hinges on balancing efficient service with attentive staff interactions. Some visitors note a preference for counter orders due to perceived speed, while others highlight inconsistencies in order fulfillment or portion sizes. Though the cafe thrives in a high-traffic location, its appeal depends on managing expectations around value for money and maintaining a more welcoming atmosphere.

Scan the QR code to order and many meals not available. Hear same name as me being called out and don’t respond as I ordered from QR code. Again, name called. No one going up to collect - walk up and see that it is my meal. I mentioned that we order from table but have to collect and the girl rudely said ‘there are only 2 of us on!’ The LARGE glass of wine for $19 is what I would expect a small glass to look like. I dare not mention anything about that to the rude staff member. This place would only still be operating due to the need for people to eat at Townsville Airport.
At the airport you're a captive audience especially after checking in. Advice, of you can, arrive full and well hydrated. Hubby and I ordered two coffees with soy milk. His was decaf and had caramel. He said it was delicious. My soy flat white was also delicious. However his coffee was $12!!!!! Certainly NOT catering for travellers on a budget. We ordered one vegan falafel wrap, and we got the option to add chips for $5. So we did, but although hot, they were very few chips. I reckon they counted them. Also the girl at the counter had such a sour face and looked at all the customers with such contempt, you’d think she’d sworn an oath to despise all who dared approach her register. So in summary: Worth it if you overlook the small portions, high prices and bad service. The food and coffee are good. To the girl at the counter, I hope your day improves 😊
Whilst the food was alright albeit a bit overpriced $31.00 for a cheeseburger and an ice latte. The attitude of the staff is not the best. Never have I seen such disinterested people who think above you. They didn’t like it when you go to the counter to order and not use the QR code. For the blonde too busy chatting and seemed displeased when I asked for cutlery. Heaven forbid you do your job. The older lady Robyn whilst she does her job and cleaning up tables the audacity asking people if they know how to use google (it’s also none of your business nor for you to push it or make make a ‘joke’ in such a manner) and if they could give a 5 star review and if you don’t she will hunt you down. It’s atrocious. Or work on your delivery/tone and attitude towards people if you want to jest/have humour like that. Let people leave a review if they want to.
Ordered with the QR code at the table and paid at 7.39 am They were not overly busy. I noticed people ordering and paying at the counter receiving their orders reasonably quickly. Being patient I waited until 8.09 am and asked at the counter about my order. They said they had no order for table 40 and had not even begun to process it. I was told it is quicker to order at the counter. I asked if I can now order the same order at the counter and was told here will be a wait and had to take my place in the queue. I had ordered a cup of of coffee and was offered a bottle of water instead. $7.41 came from my account. My flight was about to board and left with nothing after having paid. I want people to know that they will take your order and money but do not guarantee you will will receive it. Very unsatisfactory. Never again
Went to the Castle Hill Cafe at Townsville Airport. Ordered a share meal, chose the Calamari at $22.00 The dish arrived, consisted of around 12 small pieces of calamari, coated in a greasy oily batter served with a small insipid salad and little tub of dressing. The serving was barely enough for one and certainly did not meet the criteria of being a shared dish. ❌ Their alcoholic drink prices were unreasonable at between $10.90 & $15. for a stubby of beer, The prices for other types of drinks were prettier much normal; such as cool ridge water $5.95, iced chocolate $8.00 (this drink was lacking taste, was overfilled with ice cubes and did not represent VFM) Cappuccino $5.95 We had to follow up on the coffee and iced chocolate as they were somehow missed off our order. ❌ Total order was $54.9, overpriced and disappointing in both portion size and quality. Certainly lacked ‘Value For Money’. Waiter was sour faced and certainly not interested in his job. Will we return? ❌No, not a snowball chance in hell! Do we recommend this eatery? ❌No, Absolutely not! Thoroughly deserving of its one 🌟Rating
A really angry and curt staff at the reception. Not sure what happened to you but your customers are not responsible for your emotions. There's no need to grab my plate away before I was ready.
We were able to grab a table easily enough and ordered at the counter. We found the staff to be really friendly and helpful and considering it was quite late in the day we found this refreshingly surprising. We grabbed the Southern Fried Barra Burger and the Duck Spring Rolls with Plum Sauce and they came out pretty quickly. The spring rolls were a little overcooked but the Barra burger was great. Eating at the airport can always be a bit hit and miss, so sometimes you just have to take a gamble with the limited options that you have. We were glad we decided on the Castle Hill Cafe!
